The West Lake is surrounded by mountains on three sides, covering an area of 6.39 square kilometers, about 2.8 kilometers wide from eas t to west, 3.2 kilometers long from north to south, and nearly 15 kilometers around the lake.

杭州西湖上的著名景點：

1、蘇堤春曉

位于西湖的西部水域，西距湖西岸約500米， 范圍約9.66公頃。北宋元祐五年(1090年) ，著名文人蘇軾用疏浚西湖時挖出的湖泥堆筑了一條南北走向的長堤。堤上建有六橋，自南向北依次命名為映波橋、鎖瀾橋、望山橋、壓堤橋、東浦橋和跨虹橋。

后人為紀念蘇軾，將此堤命名為"蘇堤"。蘇堤是跨湖連通南北兩岸的唯一通道，穿越了整個西湖水域，因此，在蘇堤上具備最為完整的視域范圍，是觀賞全湖景觀的更佳地帶。在壓堤橋南御碑亭處駐足，如圖畫般展開的湖山勝景盡收眼底。

蘇堤自北宋始建至今，一直保持了沿堤兩側相間種植桃樹和垂柳的植物景觀特色。春季拂曉是欣賞"蘇堤春曉"的更佳時間，此時薄霧蒙蒙，垂柳初綠、桃花盛開，盡顯西湖旖旎的柔美氣質。

2、曲院風荷

位于西湖北岸的蘇堤北端西側22米處，范圍約0.06公頃，以夏日觀荷為主題，在視覺上呈現出"接天連葉無窮碧，映日荷花別樣紅"的特色。

曲院，原為南宋(1127－1279)設在洪春橋的釀造官酒的作坊，取金沙澗之水以釀官酒。因該處多荷花，每當夏日荷花盛開、香風徐來，荷香與酒香四處飄溢，有"暖風熏得游人醉"的意境。

3、平湖秋月

位于孤山東南角的濱湖地帶、白堤西端南側，是自湖北岸臨湖觀賞西湖水域全景的更佳地點之一。以秋天夜晚皓月當空之際觀賞湖光月色為主題。

"平湖秋月"景觀完整保留了清代皇家(17-18世紀)欽定西湖十景時 "一院一樓一碑一亭"的院落布局。
